The United States Federal Government demands that anyone who services, repairs or opens a condenser, fixes, repairs or disposes of appliances and/or parts of an air conditioning and refrigeration system, that contain a regulated refrigerant, must have an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification in accordance with section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act. All technicians are required to pass the section 608 exam, to obtain certification in manipulation, correct recovery and handling techniques of refrigerants, established as of November 1994.
The individual taken this exam needs to be familiar with the basic refrigeration cycle and services procedures.
The certification granted depends on the type of equipment on which the technician will work. The four (4) categories of certification are:
- Type I.
- Type II.
- Type III.
- Universal.
Under another person’s certification you are prohibited to work.
Federal Regulation.
Section 608 of the Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants, be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques as required by the EPA’s National Recycling and Emission Reduction Program. Regulated refrigerants currently includes: CFC, HCFC, HFC, and HFO refrigerants.
The test contains four sections: Core, Type I, Type II and Type III.
The “Core” section of the exam contains essential information for the technician and it is necessary to pass this section in order to become certified.
